Local Moves

  1. Pack an overnight bag containing all the essentials. In case you’re too tired to start unpacking, you will want access to pajamas, clean clothes (especially if you have to work the following day), and your ‘must have’ electronics.
  2. Pack all the things you will need right away in clear plastic bins. Consider items like a x-acto knife, paper towels, garbage bags, utensils, device chargers, toilet paper and tooth brush.
  3. Wrap anything that can break (dishes, glasses, etc.) in clothing. You’ll save on bubble wrap. Hint: Socks provide excellent padding for glasses and stemware.
  4. Add the contents of each box as well as the room they should be going into. Remember to label the SIDES of the boxes, not the tops. It’s hard to read the top of boxes when they’re stacked.
  5. Use plastic wrap to cover the openings of your toiletries, and screw the tops back on.
  6. Pack plates like records, vertically. They’ll be less likely to break.
  7. Cover drawers with stretch wrap – this will allow you to move them with the contents intact. No need to unpack and refold the contents.
  8. Place small parts like screws and mounts in sandwich bags. Tape the bags to the item they correspond to.
  9. Take a photo of your electronics and surround sound so you can reconnect the wires in the correct places the first time!
  10. For local moves, arrange for a sitter for the children and pets. The last thing you need to worry about is losing track of either during a move!
